LMAO. Jonathan, I did the exact same thing. But look on the bright side, since we are all doing it, we must be on the right track, no?

just when you think you have an original thought in your head you google 'heterotopia' and 'second life' to make sure no one has already had that idea and you find Angelina Thomas' blog.

Sorry, I'm being overly dramatic and thanks for the tip on the 'metaxis,' will definitely be used to inform my thesis on the built environment of second life. I'll cite you of course.

I'm going to seriously think about heterotopias for a while (by the way have you read Delaney's 'Trouble on Triton: An ambiguous heterotopia'?) and if you're interested I can keep you posted on whether or not I come up with anything.

Thanks for bringing heterotopia to my attention Anya!

I've been struggling to find the more correct terminology when trying to define multiple sets of simultaneous "spaces" - digital space vs real space.
Heterotopology is probably most descriptive of what I've been researching for my thesis in Architecture....which does involve SL to a theoretical extent.

I'm a newb to SL, but I believe that SL is more than the simulacra. The massive multi-userness nature of SL, allows culture, economy, and all the social goodies of a real-life society to occur...except in it's reacting to itself rather than something in reality.

I suppose there's a gradient of 'simulation of reality vs spacial independence' in SL - but things such as feelings, or thought which are generated from user relationships within SL, bring it beyond a mere representation of time and space....maybe?

Hi DrJoolz :) These are interesting questions! I can't really say that I prefer SL over RL because for me SL is just enriching and extending my RL. I get caught up in significant moments in SL and don't want to drag myself away to be sure, but equally I get caught up in going for real walks in the sunshine or engaging in social events in the offline world and don't want to be back inside sitting at the computer sometimes :) Because SL is so rich and diverse and creative and fun I love being there. But fortunatley I have a pretty rich and creative offline life as well so i think there's a good balance - and I can get totally immersed in anything I get involved in, whether it be offline or online :)

That is completely fascinating Anya. I am incredulous how absorbed you are in this Do you feel resentful to be interrupted by 'real life'? Do you prefer SL?
